A NINE-year-old girl was stuck up to her waist in mud for more than two hours last night.

Firefighters from Manningtree and Colchester were called just after 9pm to help the girl, who had stepped off a path onto the bank of a pond in Furze Hill Forest, Mistley, Essex, and became trapped by thick mud.

It is believed that the build up of heavy rain over the past few days had made the solid bank into thick and dangerous mud, which quickly trapped her legs when she stepped on it.

Assistant divisional officer Danny Fearn said: "She was around half a mile from the nearest road. Her friends had spent around an hour trying to get her out, but when a passing dog walker came across the scene he called for us to come and help. Crews worked really hard digging her out in what was a dark and muddy situation."

The girl was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of being out in the cold. She also had an ankle injury.
