IT may be a virtual space – but the money is hard cash!

For a Suffolk grandmother is celebrating today after she won £180,000 playing casino games on the internet.

Armchair gambler Ann French who lives in the Woodbridge area now says she won't be going back to traditional bingo after a stake of just £4.50 scooped her £137,000 – the biggest "slot machine" payout in Britain.

"It certainly beats bingo, which I used to play. The most I ever won was £100," said Ann, who is planning to spend her windfall on a dream holiday in Italy with her husband Michael, 49.

The 48-year-old school dinner lady used her computer mouse to spin the reels on the Las Vegas style fruit machine. Before that she twice won £20,000 playing cards and picked up other cash prizes.

"It's marvellous to visit a casino without leaving home. But I wouldn't trust myself in Las Vegas," admitted the mum-of-two.

Ann, who has two grandchildren, plays four times a week for up to two hours a go using a credit card for stakes but sets herself a limit of £100 for each session.

Jackpot cash pours out of machines on screen but winnings are paid later by cheque.

The site www.ladbrokescasino.com is run by bookmakers Ladbrokes and offers 50 games including poker and fruit machines.

A string of safeguards are in place to ensure gamblers do not end up on the slippery slope to debt.

Customers can only use one credit card. Once they have set their daily credit limit it cannot be increased.

There are limits on the number of times they can play and the bookies step in to stop excessive gambling if they feel there is a problem.
