The brewery behind a pub in Kesgrave which was seen washing glasses in buckets of water on the floor has said the standards were “not acceptable”.

The Farmhouse pub in St Isidores on the Grange Farm estate experienced a fault with its glass dishwasher on Friday last week, which left the pub unable to use it to clean glasses.

But visitors on Friday afternoon and Saturday reported that instead of washing glasses in a sink, three buckets had been filled with water and put behind the bar, with glasses instead being given a dip inside.

A picture was circulated on social media of the buckets, with the user stating that glasses were being given “one dip in each bucket”.

The pub, which is a Hungry Horse restaurant and owned by Greene King, has come under fire for the issue, which Greene King said was “not acceptable”.

A spokesman from the brewery said: “We experienced a problem with our front-of-house glasswasher late last week and a plumber came to fix a drainage issue on Saturday and return the machine to working order.

“There is also further work taking place today [Monday] to ensure the problem does not reoccur.

“We would like to apologise to our guests for the way in which we were cleaning the glasses for a very short time while the machine was out of order.

“We recognise this was not acceptable and it fell below our very high standards.

“We’re re-visiting training with our team members to ensure it does not happen again.”

The spokesman confirmed that since the dishwasher had been repaired on Saturday evening, all glasses had been going through the dishwasher and cleaned appropriately.

It is understood the general manager has been off with long term sick leave over the last month.

Greene King did confirm however that additional training would take place with staff there to make sure there were no issues with the procedures they were expected to follow.

A spokeswoman from Suffolk Coastal District Council said its food safety team had not been contacted over any concerns with the Farmhouse, and there were no inspection plans as a result of the issue.
