TWO conservation enthusiasts are needed to head a Kesgrave committee.

Chairman of Conservation Awareness in Kesgrave Henry Ferguson has decided to call it a day.

Despite appeals within the group itself and to the town council, so far no one has come forward to take on the role.

Mr Ferguson's wife Myrtle who launched the group in 1990 is also retiring as secretary.

Until a new chairman or woman has been found the group will have to be temporarily suspended, although the good work should be able to continue for a while.

Mr Ferguson said: "When I took over I arranged it in a structure of various groups dealing with different areas.

"For example there are people who deal purely with mammals and they all get on with their own thing at the moment."

CAIK has been up and running for the last eleven years and they have been heavily involved in the landscaping of Kesgrave.

At the moment the group is trying to create a butterfly garden at Pergola Piece, where there will be butterfly friendly plants and a nettle patch to attract and feed caterpillars.

Other projects include the replacement planting of cedar trees in the grounds of the All Saints Church which were devastated by hurricanes as well as setting up a conservation area in the churchyard.

They have also launched planting programmes of bluebells and other wild flowers as well as crocuses around the town.

A newly created wildlife pond in Long Strops was also made by the group.

The Ferguson's have decided they can no longer carry on as chairman and secretary because of other commitments.

Mr Ferguson said: "Anyone with an interest in conservation will be able to take this on.

"I am no means an expert but you learn as you go along.

"We do have experts in the group who know about all different areas of conservation."
