A MYSTERY fire undid the hard work of an Ipswich resident after a blazing doormat filled her stairwell with thick smoke.

Retired care worker Mrs Ruby Cocker was alerted to the blaze by a fellow resident at her block of flats on Woodbridge Road.

The small fire, which broke out shortly after 1pm yesterday, left an ugly burn mark in the hall which Mrs Cocker, 79, had cleaned just days before.

"I was lying down when a young man from upstairs knocked on my door. I suppose he wanted to see if I was alright.

Describing the scene that greeted her when she left her flat, she said: "There was thick smoke but we didn't know what it was. The man said that one of the doormats was on fire but we don't know how it happened.

"I'd only cleaned the hall last week," she added. "I suppose we were lucky, though. Nothing like this has ever happened here before. It could have been a lot worse."

Two fire appliances from Princes Street attended the fire and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames within half an hour.
