Volunteer lifesavers were called rescue a motorboat which had run aground in the mouth of the river Deben during this morning’s thick fog.

The Harwich RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was called out just before 8am to assist the vessel, which had four people on board and had called for help.

The assistant harbour master at Felixstowe Ferry, Stephen Read, also attended and agreed to stay with the vessel to await the incoming tide.

No longer required, the RNLI crew returned to the station in Harwich.

An RNLI spokesman said: “Despite it being a bright day here on the coast today, fog is continuing to present a challenge.

“Having radar on the new Inshore Lifeboat is certainly a help.’

‘When we attend incidents at the river Deben entrance, we often work with Stephen Read and we are grateful for his help once again today.”
