THERE are tall stories, improbable sagas and unlikely tales. Then there is Gordon Haskell.

In the twilight years of his career this little known singer song writer wowed the music industry with his surprise hit single, How Wonderful You Are.

Even before its official release the song had surpassed The Beetles, Hey Jude and Frank Sinatra's, My Way to become the most requested record ever aired on BBC Radio 2.

This surprise star of 2001 is coming to the Regent in Ipswich to show audiences a little of the magic that struck a cord with millions of listeners of all ages.

While most may not know the career of this reluctant star he has lived a life many a well known musician would be proud of.

In the 1970s he shared a flat with Jimi Hendrix and even wrote and recorded with the tragic genius.

"The flat belonged to the Animals but they were away touring so we stayed there," he said.

How Wonderful You Are, was written for a friend who was suffering from low self esteem.

"The song was saying to her, "do you know how special you are?" But it is also universal . It is for dustmen, the cleaners, the nurses and everyone who deserves a pat on the back. The hidden potential of every human being on the planet," he added.

The song was championed by Radio 2 and then Gordon was signed by eastwest Records to a long-term record deal.

The first album is Harry's Bar. The road to Harry's Bar has been long and winding and it has taken the world more than a little time to catch up with the talent of Gordon Haskell but now is the chance.

Gordon will be at the Regent on May 9 if you would like to see this reluctant star perform then call the box office on Ipswich 433100.
