TODAY our election webpoll is on the subject of Europe.

In 2001 it was the issue that dominated the Conservative campaign - and was blamed by many Tories for the party's failure to seriously dent Labour's majority.

This time it hasn't been such a dominant issue, but it is still bobbing about under the surface - and there should be a referendum on the European constitution later this year.

And the presence of the UK Independence Party - with its call for a total withdrawal from the European Union - in many constituencies adds an extra spice to the debate.

Labour is in favour of the constitution and of taking a leading role in Europe.

The Conservatives want to remain in the European Union, but are opposed to the new constitution and want Britain to take back some of the powers that have been transferred to Brussels.

The Liberal Democrats are the most Euro-friendly party, and would like Britain to integrate further into the EU.
