IPSWICH and south east Suffolk had its heaviest snowfall for more than 18 years according to weather expert Ken Blowers.

Mr Blowers measured five inches of snow in his Ipswich garden - and a similar amount was recorded at the weather station at Wattisham airbase.

That was the heaviest snowfall in Suffolk since February 1991 when 13 inches fell.

The snow in February this year came on several separate days - but at no time did more than an inch fall.

And last night's snow was described by Mr Blowers as “wet and sticky” - which stuck to trees and plants and causes major problems for traffic.

“The last time we had this much adhesive snow was just before Christmas in 1981 - a generation ago,” he said.
