AS WOMEN get more assertive and know exactly what they want, one new Singles club has decided a different approach is needed to get that perfect romance underway.

AS WOMEN get more assertive and know exactly what they want, one new Singles club has decided a different approach is needed to get that perfect romance underway.

Suffolk Singles, based in Melton, has been up and running since November and so far has seen several couples disappear into the sunset – literally.

Director Mary Brame puts it all down to one thing – ditch the telephone and make sure your first contact is face to face.

The new approach she takes, is one that some may consider to be age-old – 'getting to know one another' over a drink and a nice meal in a cosy country pub.

Suffolk Singles will set up the time, the date and the venue and all the clients have to do is turn up.

According to former saleswoman Mrs Brame, the usual practice is to give clients each others' telephone number and let them set up the date themselves.

She said: "Some people find that they talk over the telephone and they have blown themselves out from the beginning.

"For example women are so much more confident today – there is definitely a new breed out there, they have the good jobs, the house and they want a really special person as well.

"Some men are not very confident on the phone and perhaps don't sell themselves very well even though they are really nice people."

So, once she has chosen who is right for who, Mary sends them off with some information about each one so they can get to know one another during the date.

And is it successful? Since she has been open, Mary has seen one couple get on so well they flew off to the Bahamas on holiday together, others have enjoyed the date so much they will definitely be going back for more.

Mary has put her success rate down to good old women's intuition.

She said: "I do profiles on people, but you just get a good feeling and think that these two people will work.

"If I don't think I will be able to set someone up with anyone, then I won't take them on.

"It might take someone up to six months or a year to find someone who they really like."
