Vince Cook, who works at SCH Supplies in Holbrook, was driving on the M1 in heavy rain delivering goods in the south Yorkshire area when a Ferrari Scuderia suddenly revved and swerved off the road in front of him.

The crash, which happened last week, made headlines across the world as the driver – who had only bought the car hours earlier – managed to escape with relatively minor injuries.

Despite suffering a heart attack earlier this year, Vince put his own safety at risk by clambering out of his van to race to the scene.

He pulled the “shaken and bloodied” driver out of the car – and has now spoken out about what he witnessed.

Vince said: “I really don’t know how it happened, the Ferrari driver didn’t know either. The car spun across the road and into a field – it hit the bank and took down two trees with it.

“I just heard this revving before it happened and thought surely he can’t be wanting to go faster in conditions like this – it was raining and the road was slippery.

“When he got out he was telling me he didn’t mean to rev and was worried something might be wrong with the car. It was only then that he said he’d only bought it a few hours before.

He added: “I parked up and jumped out of the van – the car was in a really bad way so I dragged the guy out – he was covered in blood, cuts and bruises.

“I couldn’t really believe it but he was alive. I’m still in shock that he survived it.”

Once he had managed to get the crash victim out of the car, Vince spotted flames coming from under the rear wheels.

He said: “I knew we had to get right away from it.

“I dragged him to the top of the hill near where the car had flown off the carriageway just in time to see the thing explode.”

Vince found some bottles of water and kitchen towel in the cab of his truck, and set about cleaning up the shaken driver.

‘We could feel the heat of the blaze from where we sat.

“It was then that I asked how much fuel he thought was in the car and he told me it was full as he’d only just bought it.”

He stayed with the man until emergency crews arrived.

But he added: “I would never have forgiven myself if there had been a fatality.”
