Heroin dealer's appeal fails
AN APPEAL bid by disabled man who was jailed for four years after police found £250 of heroin hidden in his Ipswich home, has failed.Paul Quartermain, whose right leg was amputated above the knee after a motorcycle smash in 1986 was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court in May last year after he was convicted of possessing heroin with intent to supply.
AN APPEAL bid by disabled man who was jailed for four years after police found £250 of heroin hidden in his Ipswich home, has failed.
Paul Quartermain, whose right leg was amputated above the knee after a motorcycle smash in 1986 was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court in May last year after he was convicted of possessing heroin with intent to supply.
He took his case to London's Appeal Court in a bid to get his sentence reduced but failed.
Quartermain, 37 of Rendlesham Court, Ipswich was sentenced on the basis that he was dealing "in a small way" and not making any real profit.
The court heard that he had an "entrenched" drug habit and no financial assets when arrested.
His barrister told the court that Quartermain was finding it difficult to cope with prison life, given the loss of his leg and restricted use of his right arm.

The prison regime made few concessions for his disabilities and he could only have one bath a month due to his inability to use the prison showering facilities.
