A homeless man has admitted shoplifting and being drunk and disorderly.
Michael Smith, 52, of Ipswich, pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared before the town’s magistrates’ court.
He also admitted failing to attend a drug assessment.
Prosecutor Lucy Miller said on December 14 Smith stole meat and milk from the Co-op in Selkirk Road.
His crime was discovered when a security guard looked at CCTV after suspecting another man he knew may have been stealing from the shop.
Smith had selected steak and milk and left the store. On February 5 police were called to Colchester Road to reports of a man being drunk. Smith stepped out in the road and was nearly run over. He was also swearing.
While in custody Smith tested positive for cocaine, but refused to attend a drug assessment
Smith was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £20 to the victims’ fund.
