HOUSEBUILDING giant Persimmon today announced that hit has cut 1,100 jobs so far this year.

The firm, which trades as Charles Church, Persimmon Homes and Westbury Partnerships, also revealed that the downturn in the housing market has seen its sales drop by 31 per cent in the past six months.

The group said that this period had "undoubtedly been the most challenging period" in its recent history.

Average selling prices had fallen to £181,500 in the first half of the year from £189,255 in the same period last year, it added.
