A POWER cut, caused by an underground cable fault, has affected 1,671 homes and businesses in Ipswich.

EDF Energy Networks said the outage involved homes and businesses in the eastern area of the town and that the cause was not related to the poor weather in the area overnight.

The power went off at 1.27am, and EDF Energy Networks' engineers had restored power to the majority of customers by 3.54am.

Further work enabled another 45 properties to be put back on supply at 4.25am.

An EDF spokesman said: “We are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore supplies to the remaining 490 customers without power.

“We would like to apologise to all customers affected for the inconvenience caused.”
