HOMES in the Holbrook and Capel St Mary area were plunged into darkness following a powercut yesterday that occurred throughout the afternoon and into evening.

Residents were left hunting for candles after a combination of bad weather and equipment failure caused a seven-hour interruption to power company 24seven's supply of electricity.

They were left without lights and power between 2pm to 9pm after high winds brought down an overhead cable in the vicinity of the Alton waterworks.

In a separate incident, an underground cable failed because of a fault with equipment, explained a spokesman for 24seven.

The power cut affected businesses in the area, including the Holbrook Co-op, which closed early.
