Hope for young businesswoman

WHEN she was made redundant, enterprising young Ipswich woman Louise Montgomery decided to have a go at running her own business.

At the age of 18 she had been appointed the youngest manager within her former employer's chain.

But when Call Print pulled out of Ipswich and she lost her job, gutsy Louise, now 22, put her redundancy pay into Splatz, an art equipment shop with the emphasis on all things arty for all ages.

Splatz, in St Helen's Street, has taken over some of Call Print's former services, such as photocopying and faxing and the rest is for the artistic inclined, whether a novice or professional.

Louise, a former Stoke High School pupil, said: "This shop had once been a hairdressers and we had a lot to do to get it transformed, taking out all the basins and fittings," she said.

Although she is not arty herself, it seemed the right line of business for her to open especially as there is a shortage of art facilities in the town.

"With me being able to continue with some of Call Print's trade and by having built up a rapport with my previous customers, I am sure it will go well," she added.

The only experience she has is from her years of being a shop manager and a natural ability to get on well with people.

"It is also better to have a good sense of humour and this I know I have got otherwise I don't think the shop would have opened yet," she added.

Being on the town centre route from the Suffolk College, Louise hopes that much of her new trade will come from students.

To begin with she is "the lone ranger" running the shop entirely single-handed.

"I hope that it won't be too long before I can take on some extra staff to help but in the meantime I will be going it alone."

Splatz is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm and from 9am to 4pm Saturday.
