Barry Clamp, 38, of Goring Road, Colchester, was struck by a car outside the hospital's accident and emergency unit at about 4.30am on Friday. He was wearing a wearing a white gown at the time of the collision, which was on an approach road in the hospital grounds.

His parents, Arthur and Rachel, and half-brother Graeme Stewart said Barry had two children - a girl aged 17 and a boy aged two.

They said: “Barry was a man always ready with a joke or a laugh. Barry was born in Scotland and came to Colchester in 2002 where he has since made many friends.

“His early childhood in Scotland gave Barry a love of the countryside and a passionate love of animals - dogs and horses being at the top of the list.

“He was also keen on camping and fishing and his interest in cars and motorcycles was legendary.”

Yesterday, police arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the incident. He was questioned on suspicion of careless driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to report a collision and was bailed until early June.

Officers also recovered a white Ford Transit van that will be subject to a forensic examination.

Police investigating the incident said they still needed to hear from any witnesses who were in the Turner Road area between 4am and 5am yesterday morning.
