SUFFOLK is set to swelter in glorious sunshine today as the county gets set for the hottest day of the year so far.

Thermometers are expected to hit highs of 23C (73F) as summer finally arrives, at least for a day.

But Evening Star weatherman Ken Blowers warned the balmy temperatures are not here to stay.

He said: “The current mini-heat wave is due to an air stream coming up from the south of France.

“That will keep with us for a while but thereafter it will start to cool off, with thundery showers to come.”

Mr Blowers forecast a drop in temperatures tomorrow, with rain set for the weekend. Yesterday temperatures reached 21C (70F).

Today, parts of the country could be warmer than popular holiday destinations such as Tenerife and the Greek island of Kos, where temperatures are predicted to reach (23C) and (19C) respectively.

But as the south east enjoys the good weather the south west, west Wales, Northern Ireland and western Scotland will have showers and thunderstorms.
