POLICE are renewing their appeal for witnesses to a savage stabbing in Stowmarket that left a man in hospital.

A 31-year-old, believed to be from Stowmarket, was taken to Ipswich Hospital with cuts to his hand and chest after being jumped by two attackers near the town's community centre in Hillside last Thursday at 10pm.

He sustained a cut to his hand and a slight injury to his chest after what is believed to have been a knife was used during the attack.

His assailants also stole a ring from him.

Police officers mobilised the police helicopter to try to track the two attackers who made off on foot.

One resident, who did not want to be named, described witnessing the aftermath: "I got up to make a cup of tea and I saw flashing blue lights through the window."

"I looked out and saw police talking to a young man by the side of the road. He didn't seem to be too badly injured, after a short while an ambulance arrived and he just walked up and got in."

"There were no sirens or anything, but a bit later on I think I heard the police helicopter hovering overhead."

The man said although the community centre was well used it was unusual for anything to be on that late at night.

Suffolk police are urging anyone who witnessed the attack should call police on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
