DETECTIVES are today still hunting a ginger-haired sex pest who attacked a woman in broad daylight.

The attack happened in an area of Martlesham that is popular with dog walkers and close to the Martlesham Heath Business Park.

As she walked along the Felixstowe Road close to the Martlesham community centre, the victim was grabbed by the attacker before being forced into nearby woodland and subjected to a terrifying attack.

Martlesham parish council offices are also based in the area and today assistant clerk Susan Robertson spoke of her shock at the attack.

She said: "It is fairly quiet around here but it varies from day to day.

"Some days there is no-one at all around here, other days it is teeming with cars.

"The first I heard of it was today."

Parish clerk Lynn Lodge said that it was a long time since something like this had happened in the area.

She said: "This is not something you want to hear about happening to anyone and it is certainly not very pleasant.

"The crime rate in Martlesham does tend to be very low.

"But we don't tend to leave our door open anyway and don't get many people calling in on the off chance."

Yesterday police were carrying out a fingertip search of the area around the community centre in a bid to catch the man.

The attack happened between 9.30am and 10.30am on Friday morning as the victim walked from her home in Martlesham Heath to Martlesham village.

She had just walked past the entrance to the community centre, which was on her left and was passing the entrance to a car park on her right, when she was approached by the man.

After forcing her to a wooded area along a footpath leading to towards Newbourne Road he sexually assaulted the victim.

The man is described as white, with medium length ginger hair and a ginger beard.

He is in his mid 30's and between 5ft 8ins and 6ft tall and was wearing light blue jeans, which were faded down the front, dark brown lace up boots and a dark coloured long-sleeved top.

Det Insp Rick Munns of Suffolk Constabulary said: "The car park is used by dog walkers and many people cut through along Felixstowe Road between Martlesham village and Martlesham Heath industrial park and the Tesco store.

"The offender has a very distinctive description and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area on Friday morning who may have seen a man with a ginger hair and a ginger beard to contact police immediately."

Anyone with information should call Suffolk police on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
