SUFFOLK: Icy roads claimed their first casualties this morning as motorists faced treacherous conditions after freezing temperatures overnight.

The driver of a commercial van was trapped inside his vehicle after it overturned on the deadly ice in Thorpe Lane, Debenham at 5.15am this morning.

Fire crews from Debenham and Eye were called to release the man, who was freed with no injuries by around 6am.

Police issued warnings to motorists after ice on the road was involved in a crash between two vehicles in Hall Road, Little Bealings near Martlesham at 8.15am.

The road was closed as recovery trucks cleared the scene but it was believed icy conditions had contributed to the prang.

An officer on the scene said: “It's like an ice rink down there.

“It's horrendous.”

The drivers were not injured in the collision but the road remains blocked.

A road in Mickfield was also blocked after a blue MG and a blue Vauxhall collided at 8am.

The drivers of two cars were not injured when their cars left Rendham Road near Saxmundham and ended up in a ditch after an incident at 7.50am.
