WHAT a whopper! Even Bugs Bunny might have bitten off more than he could chew faced with this one.

WHAT a whopper! Even Bugs Bunny might have bitten off more than he could chew faced with this one.

This mighty carrot, weighing almost 3lbs, was not part of an elaborate experiment to grow mutant vegetables.

It just grew under the tender loving care of Ipswich man Malcolm Hannatt in his allotment on the town's Gainsborough estate.

The BT worker from Fletcher Road said he was stunned when he pulled out the huge carrot from the soil at his Morland Road plot.

He said: "I tried pulling it out like all the others but I couldn't do it. I had to get a fork and dig it out.

"I was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw the size of it."

However his carrot is not in the record books just yet as the biggest one ever recorded topped the scales at 10lbs.

Mr Hannatt, 52, said he still could not believe how big the carrot was and hid it in the shed for some time before telling his wife Roslyn.

He said: "I just put it in the shed and thought that it couldn't be right. Carrots just don't grow like that."

Evidently they do and Mr Hannatt is becoming the envy of the allotment with his Midas touch.

Earlier this year he grew a red beet that was too big to fit in the bucket and has also been known to grow huge marrows as well.

But he insists that there is nothing more that goes on his soil than nature's finest farmyard manure.

He said: "I just use the same as everyone else. I have been gardening since I was 14 years old and carrots were the very first thing I grew but I have never grown one that big before."

He doesn't have a clue what his secret is but thinks he may have gained his expertise while working on a farm near Hollesley Bay as a youngster before he moved to work in the catering department at BT.

So far the carrot has been basking in the glory of fame and Mr Hannatt still has not decided what to do with it – but wife Roslyn is planning a stew for the weekend in a very big pot!
