A SUFFOLK golf club looks set to get the go-ahead for another phase of expansion that will establish it as one of East Anglia's leading leisure complexes.
Stoke by Nayland Golf Club has submitted plans to Babergh District Council to add a host of plush new facilities to its 18-hole golf course in Keepers Lane, Leavenheath.
Included in the plans is a new lounge bar for golfers, an aerobics studio, ladies' changing rooms, administrative offices and also a staff room with a golf manager's office.
It is also proposed to add a three-story 46-bedroom extension to the current 30-bedroom hotel, and to extend the gym and water therapy area.
The club, which was established in 1969 and is based on two 18-hole golf courses, hopes the extension will enable it to meet demand for a growing number of wedding parties and conferences that it aims to attract.
Business has been so good since a previous development around two years ago that the family owned concern wants to expand further.
It is also a major centre for weddings and says it requires the rooms for weekend guests as well as for players at high profile golf tournaments. The club has already attracted a whole host of top Premier League clubs to use their facilities.
Stoke By Nayland Parish Council has recommended that the scheme is approved, but has expressed concerns about the possible increase in traffic along Keepers Lane resulting from the proposed development.
The development is proposed in the rolling countryside of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a council officer's report has concluded that it would not have a detrimental effect on the area.
It has recommended that the plans be given the go-ahead, subject to no objections being raised by the Highways Agency.
The issue is due to be discussed by Babergh District Council on January 8.
