The injured man was on the seafront in Harwich at about 4pm on Saturday when the emergency services were called.
The Essex Ambulance Service was first on the scene, but quickly called for help from the coastguard.
Walton Coastguard was launched and was on the way to the scene but was stood down after the owners of a 4x4 vehicle helped paramedics finally reach the man.
