AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of popular young footballer whose body was found in an Essex river.

Adam Passfield went missing on December 19 after a night out with friends and the 22-year-old's body was discovered in the River Chelmer on New Year's Eve.

After the popular Heybridge Swifts footballer went missing a massive man-hunt was launched by Essex Police as Adam's family, from Galleywood, near Chelmsford, made emotional appeals for his return.

But Adam's body was found in the River Chelmer within 24 hours of Environment Agency officials lowering the water-level to assist police with the search.

An Essex County Council spokesman today confirmed that a post-mortem, carried out on Friday, had given the cause of death as immersion.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned until a later date.
