AN investigation has been launched after a man was a victim of a vicious attack in Ipswich's town centre.

The 34-year-old was taken to hospital with serious head injuries following the assault outside a taxi rank in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A witness spotted a fight breaking out between a group of men and the victim while they were in a queue for a burger van by Hawk Express on the corner of Old Foundry Road and Great Colman Street at about 2.45am.

Megan Rundle, 27, a dental nurse from Ipswich, said: “I saw his head being stamped on. It looked really nasty. There was blood everywhere.

“I think the man was very lucky. I didn't think about what I was doing. I just screamed at them to get off him and went over to help. I was lucky they didn't turn on me and do something.

“Another man came out of his house and we put him in the recovery position and called for an ambulance. He was unconscious.

“Police and ambulance arrived really quickly.”

Police said the victim was discharged from hospital on Monday. Two men have since been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

A crew from East of England Ambulance Trust attended the scene and took the victim to Ipswich Hospital with head injuries.

A Suffolk police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 2.50am. A 34-year-old man was injured.

“Two men have been arrested and further enquiries are being carried out.”

- A 42-year-old man from Thetford and a 39-year-old man from Ipswich were arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and resisting arrest. They were both bailed to return to Ipswich police station on August 26.
