POLICE launched an investigation today after a man's body was found under the Orwell Bridge.

A dog walker reported discovering the body of a white male on a footpath near The Strand, Wherstead just after 8am.

Police and ambulance officers attended and the man's body was located. The ambulance officers pronounced him dead at the scene and efforts were being made to establish his identity.

It is believed the man, who was thought to be aged between 30 and 35 may have fallen from the bridge a few hours before the body was found and are trying to track anyone who could have seen the man in the moments before his death.

His body was found only about 20 yards from The Strand in an area which is popular with walkers. Police sealed off the footpath which runs under the bridge while they carried out their investigation into the death but it is not being treated as suspicious.

It is not yet clear how long the man's body had been under the bridge. Scenes of Crime Officers were due to attend this morning to carry out a full investigation of the area where the body was found.

The body was due to be removed by mid-morning and taken to the mortuary.

Three officers secured the area this morning as the investigation got under way.

Sergeant Trevor Smith of Suffolk Police said: “Somebody was walking their dog and came across the body earlier this morning.

“We are not treating the death as suspicious at the moment but we would ask for witnesses to contact us as somebody may have seen something.”

Anyone who has information relating to the death should call Suffolk Police on 01473 613500.
