An Ipswich artist whose collectors include Brad Pitt, David Beckham and Davina McCall is taking his work to new regions.

Dom Pattinson, who began his career as a street artist, has been invited to hold an exhibition in the Pakistani city of Karachi.

“No one from the west has exhibited in Pakistan since they split from India so it’s breaking the mould,” Mr Pattinson said.

“The work won’t be political but the fact I have been invited to exhibit there is the political statement.

“The work will be about hope, acceptance, about being comfortable with who you are and with other people, and that’s my political message.”

The 46-year-old, of Woodbridge Road East in Ipswich, has been an artist for 15 years but he has also worked as a teacher at schools in Suffolk and as a boat builder.

Mr Pattinson will display 10 canvasses and 10 large scale paper pieces at the Sanat Initiative Gallery in Karachi from March 15 for two weeks. Any work that is not sold will then be taken to an exhibition in New York.

“It’s such an important show, not just for me but for the whole of the art world,” added Mr Pattinson, who has four children.

“I was apprehensive to begin with but I reached out to a whole variety of people I know who have lived in Pakistan and had a long chat with them and the art market in Pakistan is an absolutely thriving one that no one knows about.”

Starting out as a graffiti artist, Mr Pattinson said he had now taken the work that he used to do on the streets into the studio.
