Spring Road in Ipswich reopened on Saturday lunchtime, four days after it was closed after a depression developed in the surface.
The road has been closed between the Cauldwell Hall Road and St Helen’s Street junctions since early on Tuesday morning – causing major problems for drivers on one of the busiest roads into the town centre.
Engineers working for Suffolk County Council found the problem had been caused by “poor ground conditions” and a “failure of historic reinforcements” in the area.
They explained years of “intense vehicle activity” had accelerated the corrosion of the ground, made of a softer and sandier material, below the surface.
The road reopened at lunchtime after strengthening works were complete.
