Four fire crews were sent to tackle a blaze at a care home in Ipswich early today.

They were called at 5.48am with two fire engines from Princes Street station initially sent to the incident.

On arrival at Thurleston Residential Home in Whitton Park they found a smoke-logged corridor in the two storey building and requested two further appliances be sent.

Six members of staff and 34 residents were evacuated from the building and at 6.42am a fire was found in the void between the basement and the ground floor.

UK Power Networks was contacted and asked to isolate power to the building and crews tackled the fire with three dry powder extinguishers and one hose reel.

The blaze was out by 7.39am and there were no casualties.
