Controversial ‘drifting’ events organised by a young businessman with a passion for cars to keep enthusiasts off the streets of Ipswich have been banned by the authorities.

Suffolk Coastal District Council served a Temporary Stop Notice on the Orwell Crossing Lorry Park, barring it from hosting the monthly Drift-swich events after it received a number of complaints from local residents.

“The Temporary Stop Notice is in relation to the unauthorised change of the use of the land from its permitted use as a lorry park...for the practice, racing, display, demonstration or exhibition of any mechanically propelled vehicles,” said a council spokesman.

“This action has been taken following complaints from local residents about noise nuisance on each of the three occasions that an ‘event’ has been staged at this site.”

Event organiser Roy Connors said he will contest the notice and claims the council has “backtracked” on previous judgements.

“I have a letter stating that the council officer who attended the event found no noise nuisance and that no formal action was required so I think they’ve completely backtracked themselves” he said.

Mr Connors, 29, said he would appeal on the grounds of the “permanent development rights 14-day rule” which he claims entitles the venue to host events so long as there are no more than 14 a year.

The owner of the truck stop, Karl Rout, had previously issued his support for the drifting events, having carried out his own noise monitoring and found little noticeable difference between that and the background of the A14.

Suffolk Coastal district councillor Christopher Hudson who had received a number of complaints about the events said he was pleased to see the authority take the appropriate action.

“It’s quite a dangerous activity and it’s really unsuitable,” he said.

The notice runs for 28 days and anyone breaching the order during that time can face fines of up to £20,000 in magistrates’ court.
