Ipswich mayor Roger Fern has sent a message of support to his opposite number in London to express the council’s condolences after Wednesday’s terrorist attack in Westminster.
Mr Fern made the proposal at the start of a scheduled full meeting of the authority after a minute’s silence was observed to mark the deaths in the outrage.
He said: “I know I speak for the whole Chamber when I express our shock and horror at the events which took place in and around the Houses of Parliament this afternoon.
“Police enquiries are obviously continuing into the nature of this attack but at this time I believe it is appropriate to record our condolences to the victims and their families.
“ Our thoughts and prayers are with London at this time and I would like to forward a message from the council to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.”
His proposal was welcomed unanimously by councillors.
