A dangerous driver has been jailed after being caught behind the wheel just three weeks after being given a driving ban and suspended prison sentence.

Christopher Morrison, of Hadleigh Road, Ipswich, admitted driving while disqualified and being in breach of a suspended sentence when he appeared at Ipswich Crown Court.

The 43-year-old also pleaded guilty to being in breach of conditional discharge he was given on another matter.

Prosecutor Robert Sadd said Morrison had previously admitted dangerous driving on May 21 and was banned from driving for 12 months. He was also given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

However, three weeks later Morrison was caught driving by police on the outskirts of Ipswich.

Mr Sadd added Morrison had spent a considerable amount of time before the courts in various parts of the country.

Paul Donegan, representing Morrison, said his client was a highly-skilled signal installer on the railways who travelled a lot.

After his driving ban arrangements had been made for other staff to pick Morrison up and take him to various sites. However, on the day he was caught someone had let him down and he used the car his partner had hired for herself.

Recorder Ian Evans jailed Morrison for a total of 11 months.

At Morrison’s sentencing in May the court heard his erratic driving resulted him colliding with a 40ft long lorry trailer on the A14 near Great Blakenham early on September 27 last year.

The lorry driver felt a massive jolt which felt as though his trailer had come off the ground.

When the driver looked to see what had happened he saw a black Audi driven by Morrison, which appeared to be out of control.

The windscreen of the car had shattered and the passenger airbag had inflated.

Fifteen seconds after the first impact the trailer was struck again by the Audi, which then sped off.

Other reports from motorists came into police, including one of a car with a broken windscreen being driven near the A14 at Norton.

The Audi re-joined the A14 at Woolpit and a lorry driver heading towards Felixstowe was forced to sound his horn after looking out of his window and seeing the Audi “creeping” into his lane.

When the Audi reached the outskirts of Ipswich it pulled across the carriageway onto a slipway at the last minute, causing a car to swerve out of the way.

After receiving a number of calls between 6am-8am, police stopped Morrison in Henley Road, Ipswich.

In addition to his driving ban and suspended sentence in May Morrison was also ordered to pay £1,000 costs.
