The death of a motorcyclist in Ipswich in the early hours of this morning is to be referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
A man in his early 20s died after crashing into railings and glass outside University Campus Suffolk at around 2.50am.
Police had been alerted to reports of a man driving at high speed through the town centre, and the matter will be passed to the IPCC given the police presence in the area at the time of the incident - as is usual procedure in such circumstances.
Police and ambulance staff tried to resuscitate the man following the crash, but he died at Ipswich Hospital a short while later.
The man has not yet been formally identified, but police have confirmed he was from Ipswich.
The waterfront was closed to allow a collision investigation to get underway and for recovery of the vehicle, with the road reopened at 8.15am.
Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the bike travelling through the town or who witnessed the actual collision.
Call the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Suffolk Police on 101, quoting CAD 53 of 26/7/14.
