Work to install a new cycle crossing at Barrack Corner on Norwich Road in Ipswich should finally be finished this week after taking twice as long as planned.
Construction work at the site – part of the £21 million Travel Ipswich project – started on April 14 and was due to be completed within five weeks.
However the work has now run into its tenth week after contractors encountered unforeseen problems. A spokesman for the county council said that while there had been a delay, this had not interfered with traffic using Norwich Road.
The new traffic lights will be synchronised with the existing pedestrian crossing outside the Co-op about 100 metres away to ensure that vehicles are not stopped twice.
Engineers were confident that the work would be completed this week – allowing the creation a new cycle route from Portman Road to north Ipswich.
