Ipswich driver, 82, charged with drink-driving after pedestrian seriously injured in collision

An 82-year-old motorist has been charged with drink-driving and failing to stop after a pedestrian was left with serious injuries.
Rodney Barber, of Bridgwater Road, Ipswich, is accused of being the driver of a Fiat Panda which collided with a 65-year-old man who sustained a broken pelvis and a broken thighbone.
The injured man also suffered a broken nose and a shattered thumb during the collision in Hawthorn Drive.
The accident occurred at around 8.30pm on October 1.
Hawthorn Drive was closed in both directions after the incident while the victim was treated and police began their investigation.
Barber was arrested around 40 minutes after the accident. He was questioned over the matter and released on bail pending further enquiries.
A Suffolk police spokesman said Barber was charged with three offences when he answered bail last week. He is accused of driving with excess alcohol, careless driving, and failing to stop after an accident.

The victim has been released from hospital, but is said to be still recovering from his injuries.
Barber is due to make his first appearance before the town’s magistrates on Tuesday next week.
