IPSWICH: As the town saw its largest ever Remembrance Sunday service in Christchurch Park, one local soldier reached across the generations with a poignant link to the conflict that started the tradition.

Ryan Wood, 21, wore the Military Medal that was awarded to his great great grandfather in 1917 – it was the first time it had ever been worn on parade.

Sgt Wilfred Howard was never presented with the medal he won for saving his comrades in France – he died in another action shortly afterwards.

But his family have kept it safe and this year Ryan was able to wear it at his home town’s service.
