NEW Ipswich MP Chris Mole has helped give a boost to clean air in the town.

At the Shell Garage in London Road Mr Mole opened the 1,000th forecourt pump in the country to dispense Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) as an alternative to petrol or diesel.

LPG is cleaner and more efficient than other fuels – and because of low excise duty costs only about half as much as normal fuel.

So far between 40,000 and 50,000 cars in the UK have been converted to LPG – but the government hopes that 250,000 will be using the fuel by the year 2004.

Cars have to be converted before they can use the new fuel – but they are able to use petrol as well as LPG.

The conversion costs about £1,500 but there are grants available for the work and a motorist driving 15,000 a year should pay for the conversion work within a year.

From then on they will benefit from fuel at 37.9p a litre instead of more than 70p a litre.

Mr Mole said he was considering switching to the new fuel.

"I don't plan to convert my current car, but when we get a new one it is certainly something we shall consider.

"This kind of fuel is very friendly to the environment – and I support anything that keeps the air cleaner," he said.
