An Ipswich musician is this month ditching the razor in tribute to his sister who bravely overcame bowel cancer.
Will Hessey, 33, is taking part in Decembeard, a national campaign encouraging men to support Bowel Cancer UK by growing their facial hair and raising cash.
He said: “Bowel cancer first came to my attention when my sister became ill with it.
“I had no idea that you could get cancer of the bowel, so I was compelled to be a part of raising awareness of it any way I could, and trying to raise funds to support those affected.”
Mr Hessey is a guitarist in Ipswich-based band, Dukes of New York.
More than 44 people die from bowel cancer every day in the UK, it’s the nation’s second biggest cancer killer.
Decembeard is backed by Bowel Cancer UK patron Chris Read, captain for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and former England cricketer.
Read’s first cricket coach died from bowel cancer and as a consequence he says his awareness of this disease increased greatly.
