IPSWICH: One of the best-known health clubs in the town has suddenly shut down leaving hundreds of members out of pocket.

Letters were sent from Gym and Trim, which has a 15,000sq ft health club on Cardinal Park, over the weekend.

Sent from manager Michelle Hadley, the letter said: “It is with great sadness that due to the economic climate and increased competition the company has been suffering financially along with many others.

“The directors therefore have made the heartbreaking decision to cease trading with immediate effect.

“Thank you for your loyal custom over the last 33 years.”

No one was available to comment at Gym and Trim or at administrators McTear and Wood of Norwich, who have been appointed to wind up the business.

Gym and Trim opened its first premises in Charles Street in 1978 and later moved to a purpose-built gym in Lower Orwell Street.

It moved to its current premises in Cardinal Park several years ago – but has faced increased competition with new health clubs opening or reopening nearby over recent months.
