IPSWICH man Lewis Carroll is starting a life being bars today after being found guilty of the murder of Phil Hoi Phat Lui.

The 31-year-old, of Crocus Close, showed no sign of emotion at Norwich Crown Court this afternoon as he was jailed for the murder of Mr Lui following an incident inside the town's Kartouche nightclub.

One of the other men in the dock Steven Lowe was cleared of murder and manslaughter.

Lowe, 24, of Spring Road, had earlier pleaded guilty to an assault on Mr Lui's friend John Catlow and received 15 months imprisonment of which he will serve half.

Toby Woods, 24, of Cosmeston Street, Cardiff, was also found guilty of violent disorder. He has been bailed for four weeks to appear again at Norwich Crown Court and has been told that all options, including imprisonment, may await him.

As the verdicts were read out by the jury foreman Carroll stared straight ahead and showed no sign of emotion, only winking as he was taken down. He smiled as his previous criminal history was read out.

Lowe breathed a huge sigh of relief at the not guilty verdicts and a huge cry of "yes" from his friends could be heard at the back of the court.

Woods, whose verdict was read first, seemed stunned and looked directly at his parents sitting at the back of the court.

Following the sentence the court heard how Carroll and Lowe had a history of violence. Carroll was charged with actual bodily harm in 1987, criminal damage in 1990 as well as two more counts of actual bodily harm, and threatening and abusive behaviour and dishonesty in 1992.

In 1994 he received eight months for wounding and in 1995 he was found guilty of two counts of common assault for which he was sentenced for four months following an incident in Coco's nightclub in Felixstowe.

On April 27 last year he received two years imprisonment for actual bodily harm, wounding and contempt of court.

Lowe was found guilty of actual bodily harm in a youth court in 1993, dishonesty, burglary and actual bodily harm in 1994. Obtaining property by deception, wounding and dishonesty in 1995, burglary in 1996, possession of amphetamines in 1998, actual bodily harm in 1999 at La Plage nightclub in Felixstowe, for which he was fined, and dishonesty in 2000.

Judge David Mellor, after passing sentence, said: "I have no doubt whatsoever that the verdict by the jury reflected the conclusion that Carroll's violence took place both inside and outside Kartouche."
