A YOUNG medical student from Ipswich will be off to the US later this year after winning a prestigious award from the Leukaemia Research Fund (LRF).

Rebecca Brett, 22, was one of only four medical students in the UK to win a LRF elective bursary, enabling her to gain vital medical experience in another country.

Based at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, she will spend six weeks carrying out research into childhood leukaemia under the supervision of Dr Clarke Anderson and his team.

Rebecca, who is currently studying at the University of Aberdeen, said: "I am delighted that LRF has supported me in following through my proposed project. Living and working in LA will be fascinating and enable me to gain much valuable experience,"

The former pupil at Amberfield School for Girls in Nacton, and Ipswich School will be leaving for Los Angeles in September.

She is currently taking her final exams at the University of Aberdeen Medical School.

Leukaemia Research Fund is the only national UK charity devoted exclusively to improving treatments, finding cures and investigating the causes and prevention of cancers of the blood and related conditions, in children and adults.
