Police are investigating a break-in at Ipswich Museum which was closed until Friday lunchtime.

A charity collection box containing a small amount of cash was the only item stolen during the burglary at the museum in High Street in the early hours of Friday morning, Suffolk Constabulary and Ipswich Borough Council (IBC) confirmed.

A window was also smashed.

The burglary alarm was activated at 3.25am and police were on the scene within eight minutes.

There have been no arrests.

An IBC spokesman confirmed there were no other items taken or damaged.

The museum was closed on Friday morning and reopened shortly before 1.15pm in the afternoon.

A notice on the door had said: “The Museum is closed today due to unforeseen circumstances. Sorry for any inconvenience.”

Galleries at the museum include Victorian natural history, Suffolk wildlife, British mammal, and Suffolk geology.
