Ipswich: Nigeria-themed day at town school sees youngsters learn more about West African nation through World Cup initiative

The Three Lions’ all too brief tour of Brazil may have left football fans in the country disappointed – but the ongoing World Cup is still proving a source of inspiration for youngsters across Ipswich.

For as England’s plane touched down yesterday, youngsters at Whitehouse Community Primary School were enjoying a Nigeria-themed day – part of the Ipswich Star World Cup Challenge.

The Marlow Road school picked the West African nation through a draw and to learn more about the country, a day dedicated to its art, culture and history was held.
During the day, parents dressed in traditional Nigerian clothes and pupils had the chance to see works of art created by Chinwe Chukwuogo-Roy, who was based in East Anglia for some time and painted the official Golden Jubilee portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Jacqui Frost, headteacher at the school, said: “We have had a really good response to it, the kids have really made an effort.
“It has been good because it has given us a cultural focus with something that has been quite current.”
The Star’s challenge has seen 26 primary schools in Ipswich paired with nations competing at the 2014 World Cup.

Each school has been encouraged to find out more about their adopted countries through themed lessons.
Yesterday’s event proved to be a big success and Mrs Frost said the school was a hive of activity as musical, art and cultural activities took place.
She added: “Whenever you do something like this it breaks the routine so there has been a great deal of excitement and a high level of interest.
“It has been a really successful day.
“The success has been down to my fantastic staff here because they are the ones who have planned these fantastic activities for the children.”
