An Ipswich-based police officer who chased and arrested a man wielding a meat cleaver is Suffolk’s representative at this year’s national police bravery awards.
PC Nikki Holley was called to an incident in Ipswich where a drunken man was kicking doors in a street.
Shortly after the officer’s arrival, the situation escalated when he was confronted by the offender.
The man was in the middle of the road brandishing the meat cleaver and threatening to kill a woman in one of the houses.
PC Holley not only had to deal with the risk to the woman, but also a number of members of the public in the street. He radioed for assistance and challenged the man, who refused to comply and ran off.
Pc Holley gave chase, and managed to catch up with him.
With little regard for his own safety he detained him, using PAVA Spray to help do so.
However, the man continued to struggle before eventually following Pc Holley’s commands and dropping his weapon.
The man was charged with threats to kill and possession of an offensive weapon.
Pc Holley’s courage will be recognised at the 22nd Police Bravery Awards on July 13 at a ceremony in London.
The awards are hosted by the Police Federation of England and Wales, and sponsored by Police Mutual.
Mark Emsden, Secretary, Suffolk Police Federation, nominated PC Holley for a Police Bravery Award.
He said: “This was a horrific situation that could have ended in tragedy.
“PC Holley willingly ran towards clear danger, intent on apprehending the offender, with no thought for his own safety.
“His heroic actions, composure and professionalism to continue with gathering evidence after narrowly avoiding serious injury or death deserves the highest recognition.”
The incident occurred in November 2014 and Pc Holley’s actions also resulted in him receiving a commendation in 2016.

“They are a true inspiration and I feel privileged and humbled to be part of the awards again.”
