A man whose body was discovered in a sheltered accommodation block in Ipswich could have died at least a day before he was found, it has emerged.

Paramedics and police were called to Trafalgar House, just off Spring Road, on Wednesday after the alarm was raised shortly after 8pm.

The ambulance service has said nothing could be done to help the man, who was described as elderly, and that he could have potentially been there more for more than a day before he was discovered.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident and that an investigation will not be taking place.

The sheltered housing scheme, based in Trafalgar Close, is for people over the age of 55.

The site gives residents the opportunity to have welfare checks, but the company that runs the scheme, Suffolk Housing, says the man who died decided not to have that.

Sue Philp, operations director with Suffolk Housing, said: “We are always saddened to hear that one of our tenants has passed away, and would like to take this opportunity to pass our condolences to this gentleman’s family and friends.

“We have an alarm system in place at Trafalgar House which tenants can use to access help during the evenings and weekends, and employ a scheme coordinator who calls on tenants to check their welfare during working hours. However, tenants are given the option to opt out of these checks if they do not feel they need them, which is what had happened in this case.”
