A PRISON officer from Ipswich has today been nominated for a top national award.

John Suffolk, of HMP Warren Hill young offenders' institute, has been put forward as Prison Officer of the Year.

The 53-year-old, of Defoe Road, has been singled out for the managing difficult prisoners award as a result of his success in developing the prison's victim awareness and anti-bullying programme.

Mr Suffolk, who has worked at Warren Hill for two-and-a-half years, said: "I'm really pleased to be nominated. I was overwhelmed actually."

He said his job is extremely satisfying at times and he enjoys working with the offenders.

He said: "Whoever works with the trainees in Warren Hill has got the responsibility of equipping them with the skills to go back into society."

"I find it rewarding and that's why I look to other avenues to see if we can help them."
