PUPILS from Westbourne Sports College celebrated a year of achievement at the school's awards evening.

Youngsters were awarded prizes for academic work and their contribution to the school in a special ceremony in front of parents, staff and governors.

Awards for both academic success and general contributions to school life were presented to students from across the school, which is being prepared to be transformed over the next few years.

Headteacher Chris Edwards told the guests that more than £20 million is to be spent on rebuilding the school over the next five years.

However he warned that the first youngsters to see the full benefit of the investment would be the 11-year-olds due to start in September.

Before the major rebuilding, the current buildings are due to updated in a £500,000-refurbishment over the summer - including updating the school canteen.

Members of the school council showed off the new uniform which they have helped to design - and the students themselves helped organise the evening which has been switched from the winter term to the end of the academic year for the first time.
