Suffolk has been chosen to host one of just 19 Race for Life Pretty Muddy events taking place across the UK this summer.

Pretty Muddy is a women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course – with mud. It will take place for the first time in Ipswich in September.

It is a new addition to the Race for Life family of events which also include the familiar 5k and new 10k courses which thousands of women will walk, jog or run.

Gemma Turpin, Cancer Research UK’s Suffolk events manager, said: “We’re so excited about launching Race for Life Pretty Muddy in Suffolk. We’re holding this exhilarating new event for the first time in the county and we’ve chosen Ipswich because we believe our supporters will love this new challenge.

“Pretty Muddy is a fantastic addition to our Race for Life family. It promises all the fun and camaraderie of our much loved 5k and 10k events but with added obstacles and, of course, mud.

“Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Instead, they are an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.

Participants may be walking, running or climbing covered in mud but what’s inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer.

“Women can complete the Pretty Muddy course at their own pace, climbing, jumping, walking and laughing their way around. It’s about women of all shapes and sizes tackling obstacles together.

“Most women who choose to take part in the 5k event are able to walk it in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer.”

Recruitment for Race for Life 2014 has just opened so the charity is urging mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends to choose their event – Pretty Muddy, 5k or 10k – and sign up as soon as possible at www.raceforlife.org

Last year, 2,014 women took part in Race for Life in Ipswich and raised a fantastic £126,157. This year, organisers need 3,500 women and girls to stride out to help raise £201,064 for vital research.

Every day, 83 people are diagnosed with cancer in the East of England. Race for Life event organisers are issuing the rallying cry: “Cancer, we’re coming to get you.”

Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the East of England.

Pretty Muddy will take place in Trinity Park on Sunday, September 7, at 11am. The Race for Life 5k and new double lap 10k routes are set for Sunday, June 15, at Chantry Park.

There will also be a 5k and 10k in Bury St Edmunds on June 22 at Nowton Park, and in Colchester on July 20 at Lower Castle Park.
